Google Desktop proxy setup

The Google Desktop now contains a Sidebar feature which can display RSS and Atom feeds (Google calls them "Web Clips") as you browse. The Web Clips Sidebar plugin uses Windows’ systemwide Internet proxy settings (according to this support email), so by adjusting these settings (also used by Internet Explorer) we can use FeedTree with Google Desktop.

1. Open Internet Options

Going to the Start menu and choosing Control Panel; from there open Internet Options.

In the "Internet Properties" window, click the Connections tab and then the LAN Settings... button.

Windows: Internet Preferences

2. LAN Settings

In the "LAN Settings" window, check Use a proxy server... and Bypass proxy server for local addresses. Then click the Advanced button.

Windows: LAN Settings

3. Proxy Settings

The FeedTreeProxy only speaks HTTP, so enter localhost and 8501 only in the fields shown below.

Windows: Proxy Settings

4. Finishing up

Click OK once on each dialog to dismiss it. Web Clips should start being filtered through the FeedTreeProxy (visit the web-based proxy monitor at http://localhost:8500 to see your feeds begin to appear there).
